Nonlinear dynamics of geodesic-acoustic-mode packets

نویسندگان

چکیده

The dynamics of finite-amplitude, undamped geodesic-acoustic-mode (GAM) packets is shown to be well described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. GAM supposed generated through an appropriate initial perturbation, and its coupling with other possible modes in the plasma disregarded. However, modifications dispersion properties due itself are retained. A theoretical approach based on variational method compare successfully particle-in-cell simulations. Typical phenomena, as known, e.g., from optics, like phase shift, phase-front shape, wave breaking analyzed. Depending electron-to-ion temperature ratio hence regime (normal or anomalous), synergy competition between dispersive packet broadening takes place. In latter regime, existence “GAM solitons” reported.

Energetic-particle-induced geodesic acoustic mode.

A new energetic particle-induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) is shown to exist. The mode frequency and mode structure are determined nonperturbatively by energetic particle kinetic effects. In particular the EGAM frequency is found to be substantially lower than the standard GAM frequency. The radial mode width is determined by the energetic particle drift orbit width and can be fairly large ...

Linear Properties and Nonlinear Frequency Chirping of Energetic Particle Driven Geodesic Acoustic Mode in LHD

Linear Properties and nonlinear frequency chirping of energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) is investigated using a hybrid simulation code for energetic particles interacting with a magnetohydrodynamic fluid. It is found that the EGAM is a global mode with the spatially uniform oscillation frequency. The poloidal mode numbers of poloidal velocity fluctuation, plasma density fl...

Linear and Nonlinear Properties of Geodesic Acoustic Mode and Beta-induced Alfvén Eigenmode

Global gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) is used to study the low-frequency modes in tokamaks including geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) and beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode (BAE). GAM and BAE have the same frequency due to the geodesic curvature and thermal particle compressibility in toroidal plasmas. Important new insights include: the collisionless damping rate of the GAM is greatly enhanced by trap...

Kinetic Theories of Geodesic Acoustic Mode in Toroidal Plasmas

Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAM) are known to constitute a continuous spectrum due to radial inhomogeneities. The existence of a singular layer causes GAM to mode convert to short wavelength kinetic GAM (KGAM) via finite ion Larmor radius (FLR) and finite guiding-center drift-orbit-width (FOW) effects. The dispersion relation of GAM/KGAM with FLR/FOW as well as parallel electric field contribution...

High-frequency nonlinear acoustic beams and wave packets

Gaussian beams and wave packets are formally equivalent to high-frequency solutions of the linear wave equation with complex-valued phase functions. The theory of weakly nonlinear high-frequency waves is extended in this paper to allow for complex phase solutions. The procedure is similar to nonlinear geometrical optics and the nonlinearity causes the phase to vary, leading to the development o...
